Palayamkottai - The Oxford
Palayamkottai is known as the "Oxford of South India"
and is the place of many colleges, few of those institutions have been imparting
higher education from the pre Independence era. Palayamkottai is a Twin city
of Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu. It is situated at a distance of 3 KM
from the capital, surrounded by paddy fields. It is on the southern side of the
River Tamirabarani, the northern bank of it is flanked by Tirunelveli.
Trinity Church erected in 1826 the Society's main
place of worship has a 35m tall spire, a land mark for miles around. The Jesuit
mission also has a church of St. Francis Xavier built in 1863.
Almost all the colleges and institutions of higher education are
in the Palayamkottai and these include many institutions that are serving the people
for over a century.
